Our Future

Overview

Here we are just two years away from the iconic date that makes up the title of this magazine. 2020 is also used to refer to good vision, and that is what we try to deliver in this publication - better vision of the future. We do that by putting into context what is happening now, because that will shape what Jersey will be like in the year 2020.

In the meantime the year 2018 might be even more significant for the Island than the year 2020, because this is an election year and whoever wins a seat in the new States in May will help to prepare Jersey for 2020 and the years following. You only have to mention a word that did not exist a couple of years ago, but which is now much overused to appreciate how important this year's election is. Brexit will have an impact on everyone in Jersey and it will be up to the States to make sure that it is as painless as possible, and perhaps even a new platform for future success.

This edition of 20/20 magazine, therefore, looks at the election and the issues facing the new States and poses some of the questions that will have to be answered.

The main theme of this magazine, however, is sports and keeping fit, which will remain important subjects whatever Brexit brings.

Jersey is very lucky to have some superb sporting facilities and a lot of enthusiastic people helping everyone from the very young to the very old to get the most benefit out of what is on offer. Inside this magazine you will find a comprehensive directory which includes details of a bewildering range of sports associations and clubs, and hopefully that will help readers who have not yet taken up a sport to find something that exactly suits their interests and aspirations. There are obvious benefits and some not so obvious benefits of getting more involved in sporting activities, and several experts show how and why this applies to you and me.

Also featured in this edition of 20/20 are the subjects most Islanders are concerned about, including how to look after and improve their property, and where to invest the money that is left over. We also learn what a typical day has in store for a varied group of Island professionals. We hope that in 2018 you enjoy 20/20.

Jersey's Ageing Population

Overview

While Jersey is very well served by the media, few newspapers, magazines, radio or T.V. stations have the time to look too far ahead into the future. They are busy enough coping with what has just happened or is about to happen. That's where we hope 20/20 Magazine comes in. The aim is to look forward so that we are better informed, and thus more prepared, for what is going to happen.

It's an approach that governments now take as well. You would think they have more than enough to worry about dealing with crises that pop up overnight, or struggling with immediate issues like trying to balance the budget. Governments now, however, realise that planning properly for the future means looking much further ahead than just to the time of the next election. Many of the problems facing communities such as ours are longer term problems which have to be dealt with over decades, not just years.

Jersey's government is certainly taking this approach which we look at in more detail in this edition of 20/20. It's particularly necessary because of one long term development that will have a significant impact on the Island, and which we also investigate at length in this magazine. The ageing population is obviously a blessing that we should celebrate, but it has implications for all of us and the sooner we get to understand them, the better.

In addition, this latest 20/20 Magazine has many of the regular features and articles which we hope you look forward to reading, as well as practical advice for getting the best out of living in this special island.

A Digital Jersey

Overview

Another 20/20 Magazine - another year passes.

A magazine of vision, we try to look into the future to see what Jersey will be like in the year 2020. Our vision may prove to be less than 2020, but we hope that we have again homed in on some of the subjects closest to Islanders' hearts in this year of 2016, the home being one of them.

Not surprisingly, all things digital are increasingly craving our attention, and the aspirations of the government and industry to ensure Jersey benefits from these developments are featured.

So this magazine looks at several aspects of the digital revolution, as well as the continuing growth of financial services as the breadwinner of many Islanders.

St Helier also plays an important part in all our lives, and this edition of our magazine considers its future as a place to live, work and visit.

Once again we assess how Jersey is meeting the challenges facing our environment, and we investigate the pros (and a few cons) of employee share ownership.

This is all rounded off with a wide range of Islanders telling us what they do during an average day at work.

We hope that you enjoy the 2016 edition of 20/20 Magazine.

A Sporting Island

Overview

As I write this, we have just finished celebrating the arrival of a New Year and Islanders in general seem to be expecting 2015 to be a good deal better than 2014.

Certainly there are signs that the economy is gradually improving, although there’s no guarantee of that in these uncertain times.

We’re now just five years away from the milestone year of 2020, which gives this magazine its name, and so we are beginning to wonder what will Jersey be like at the beginning of the next decade?

Well, I for one, haven’t got a clue and there aren’t many people with a crystal ball efficient enough to answer that question. All we can say with some certainty is that the threats and opportunities facing this small island community in 2015 will be even more marked in 2020.

Economic prosperity, environmental issues, immigration and an ageing population are all likely to feature as heavily in the 2020 edition of this magazine as they do in this edition. Indeed we hope in this way to make a contribution to the debate about how we are to deal with these very major issues.

So in this edition of 2020 magazine we explore some of the attempts to diversify the economy, and the prospects for new industries to provide more varied jobs. We also consider how to enhance and protect one of our most valuable assets - our homes.

Both of these subjects have implications for the environment, so we also provide an update on our planning laws and how we are trying to become more environmentally responsible.

This edition also includes our regular review of what to do with our money (and what not to do with it), and because this year is a very special year for Island sportsmen, we also look behind the scenes at the biggest event ever to take place in Jersey, the NatWest Island Games.

Finally, Islanders with interesting jobs give us an insight into what makes their working day challenging and satisfying.
